Deborah Magee does contemporary and traditional artwork, using the media her ancestors used – beadwork and quill-work. While she studied the traditional methods from a mentor who repaired and restored Native American artifacts and learned traditional construction techniques, she also likes to take these ancient techniques and “push the envelope”, thus bringing those methods into the twenty-first century in a contemporary way. “My ancestors used what they had on hand and made art that meshed with their lifestyle", she says, “so today, I try to take what is important to my native culture and create a piece of work that has meaning and beauty, but is still connected to the past.”
